This report considers how Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) have attempted to resolve conflicts in the southern Sahel of Sudan brought about, in part, by environmental change. It argues that human security discourse may provide the appropriate channels for the study of environmental-related conflict, and also to develop appropriate intervention strategies. The report also outlines that most NGO interventions assist communities by strengthening conflict resolution capacity and creating opportunities for conflict resolution and reconciliation; that some NGOs manage human insecurity by addressing the environmental threats in question; and that NGOs include context-specific ‘developmental’ project elements in their intervention design.
