This handbook seeks to provide a guide to the basics of verification and compliance in the field of arms control and disarmament, focusing on conventional, nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons. Jointly published by the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR) and the Verification Research, Training and Information Centre (VERTIC), the book provides basic information on the role of verification and compliance, as well as explanations of key terms and concepts. The authors also outline specific verification and compliance arrangements and regimes, discuss the differences between multilateral, bilateral, and Security Council-mandated verification, and examine the main verification systems, techniques, and technologies available.
