Beyond their immediate experience in Libya, and in the wake of the Arab Spring, NATO allies will have to re-calibrate their relationships with Middle Eastern countries. One way to do so, argues this commentary, is to update and adapt the Alliance's long-standing partnership mechanisms in the region (the Mediterranean Dialogue and the Istanbul Cooperation Initiative) to support budding democratic movements in limited and complementary ways.
