The 2005 Human Development Report takes stock of human development, including progress towards the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Looking at statistics and beyond, it highlights the human costs of missed targets and broken promises. The authors identify extreme inequality between and within countries, and argue that this is one of the main barriers to human development and a powerful brake on accelerated progress towards the MDGs. The report discusses appropriate aid policies for the 21st century, assesses how to unlock the potential of international trade for human development, and examines ways of containing and preventing violent conflict.
