This publication discusses the development of the Svoboda (Freedom) Party into an important player on the Ukrainian political scene. Even though Ukrainian national-level politics is dominated by the Party of Regions, the western part of the country has seen an increase in the activity of the Svoboda (Freedom) Party, a group that has used the rhetoric of European anti-liberal and neo-nationalist movements to bring a fresh impetus to Ukrainian nationalism in general. Although its ultimate influence may be restricted to Eastern Galicia, Svoboda is nevertheless determined to fight pro-Russian tendencies in Ukrainian politics and society. Its historical resentments against Poland will also complicate Ukrainian foreign and domestic politics, as this commentary attempts to show.
