This publication introduces a new conceptual framework for understanding and describing the factors that create a peaceful society. The framework was derived from an empirical analysis of the Global Peace Index (GPI). It links peace with key common economic, governance and cultural attitudes as well as with a number of formal and informal institutions. It does not aim at isolating causality; rather it describes the 'optimum' environment for peace to flourish.
