This policy brief looks at why public access to the financial records of public officials is critical to monitoring and oversight of potential conflicts of interests in South Africa. It first outlines the key legislative requirements for accessing the records and then looks at the major challenges that citizens face when trying to do this. Finally, the brief offers practical steps that municipalities can adopt to ensure that they uphold the principles of openness and transparency.
