This paper introduces and presents the findings of a study on the police training environment and some of the key challenges to the smooth deployment of trained police officers to peacekeeping operations. To do this, it uses experiences gained from the years of police training provided by the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) to two police regions in Africa. This paper complements the results of a separate study that focused on bottlenecks to civilian training and deployment.
