This brief looks at the engagement of the European Commission (EC) in the bilateral gas relations between Poland, Bulgaria and Lithuania - and Russia. It looks at the role of the EC in gas negotiations between the three EU member states and Russia as well as at the goals behind its involvement and the effects. The authors argue that although the long term outcome of this activity of the EC is as yet unclear it seems to be important for several reasons.
