This brief presents five propositions regarding how foreign aid can contribute to the process of economic development and make a significant, sustainable impact. According to the author ‘business as usual’ will not do. Instead, the more complex answer is that it must first be understand how economic development and sustainable poverty reduction occur. And while such factors are driven by private sector development, current understandings of such development can be too simplistic and even naïve about how companies and industries emerge and the necessary relations between government and business.
