This briefing offers an update on the conflict in Sudan between the government forces and the two main rebel movements, the Sudan Liberation Army/Movement (SLA) and the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM). The author describes the roots of this conflict and discusses why discord persists between the rebel movements themselves, and in their relations with the government. The briefing concludes with recommendations for all the actors in the conflict as well as for the international community, and stresses the importance of resolving all conflict in order to create a lasting peace.
