This paper discusses the changes in Western foreign policy regarding the conflict in Darfur that must be made in order to awaken Arab public interest in the region. Western public debate centered on the concepts of ‘responsibility to protect’ and ‘international justice’ fails to engage the Arab world, argues the author. Instead, policy makers should facilitate the flow of credible information, emphasize the Islamic identity of Darfur, and pay more attention to Arab concerns about development and security in the region. He goes on to say that American and European attempts at engaging the Arab community on the question of Darfur so far has been seriously compromised by Western governments’ own selective application of justice and protection.
