This report discusses developments in the Afghanistan/Pakistan region against the backdrop of President Obama's new insurgency strategy. The strategy proposes a conciliatory approach to Afghanistan with a focus on development which, apart from economic aid, would offer political assistance to encourage good governance. It also shifts the focus from developing a centralized state to the various provinces and different ethnic groups electing their representatives as they deem fit, as long as they do not harbor terrorists in their midst and espouse equal rights for women and girls.
