This study provides a qualitative overview of the histories, current lives, current health status and experience of health services in South Africa of refugees and asylum seekers. The data suggests that there are between 5,500 and 13,500 tortured exiles living in South Africa, which are in need of health services but are not receiving appropriate treatment. Only a few people were processed relatively efficiently in the asylum seeking process, while the majority recounted stories of great inconvenience, cost and distress arising from the asylum seeking process. Finally, the study provides an array of recommendations for various government bodies, NGOs, training institutions and future research.
