This brief looks at the 2012 elections in Uttar Pradesh (UP), India’s largest state. The author examines the prospects of the vying parties and the various factors that will influence the final results of the elections. He argues that the election is important from a national perspective for two reasons. One, it might bring about a change in the federal coalition governing India; and two, it will be a test of strength for Rahul Gandhi’s leadership.
