The Human Security Report 2005 presents a comprehensive and evidence-based portrait of global security. It identifies major trends in global political violence, asks what factors drive these trends, and examines their consequences. The report finds that the patterns of political violence have changed considerably over the past decades. Due to the end of colonialism, the end of the Cold War, and the upsurge of international activities designed to prevent wars, the number of deaths resulting from armed conflicts has dropped significantly. Nonetheless, the authors maintain that while the report gives reasons for optimism, it should not be seen as a cause for complacency in the struggle against global conflict.
