Hosni Mubarak's resignation and the wholesale transfer of his power to a Supreme Military Council have brought the Egyptian army to the center of the political stage. The author identifies the army's stated and hidden agendas and examines what the armed forces could be tempted to do. He argues that it is possible that the army favors coming to an agreement with the Muslim Brotherhood while at the same time honoring Egypt's international commitments, especially the peace treaty with Israel.
