This paper assesses the political involvement of women in Yemen, which has been influenced by the different historical legacies of state-building, competing nationalist and religious discourses, changing socio-economic conditions, and urban-rural divides. More specifically, the text’s author considers 1) the political role women have played in Yemen historically, including during periods of violent conflict; 2) the social norms that govern women’s activism in the country; and 3) how women have contributed to Yemen’s peacebuilding processes, to include the strategies they’ve used, the obstacles they’ve overcome, and the results they’ve achieved.
