This report describes how failed states have made it to the top of the international agenda since 11 September 2001. The author provides an overview of the international debate on how to approach failed states. The author also details the origins of failed states and discusses four different approaches commonly used for dealing with failed states. The report concludes that the issue of how to deal with failed states requires political and not technical solutions.
