This report examines humanitarian disasters in the year 2005. The authors discuss a number of specific examples and outline the scale of the humanitarian challenge posed by man-made and natural disasters. The report concludes that the number of people affected by disasters worldwide is rising, that humanitarian responses are often dependent on media coverage, and that governments often react too slowly. The report concludes with a set of specific policy recommendations to ensure appropriate assistance and aid to victims of humanitarian catastrophes.
