This brief discusses protests, such as the "Occupy" movement, and asks whether they point to a larger global trend or whether they are isolated, short-term and probably irrelevant. To examine this, it looks at Western protests in relation to more deep-seated problems in countries, such as China and India, and puts this view into a broad historical perspective.
