In this paper, the author examines the complex relationship between the US, the People's Republic of China, and Taiwan. He considers the situation in terms of deterrence theory and its application across cultures. The paper looks at the perceptions and misperceptions of the parties involved, their interests, capabilities, and possible intentions. He concludes by proposing possible courses of action and ways to bolster US deterrence in the Taiwan Strait.
