This paper illustrates the need for regional and sub-regional approaches to collective security using examples from the Asia-Pacific region. It concludes that treating these relationships from a global perspective, and thus ignoring local norms, can cause unnecessary friction. The author also provides a set of policy recommendations to achieve US goals in the region.
