This paper discusses the concept of international leadership, tasking as its example the role of the US in Bosnia. The analysis begins with an examination of the way in which international leadership becomes important in crisis management and most specifically in peace implementation operations. It then examines the case of the US leadership role that orchestrated international action in Bosnia leading to the Dayton peace accords. Finally, the paper discusses American commitments and strategic investments around the implementation of Dayton. It concludes that international leadership provides collective action with unity and direction and is a highly effective foreign policy tool for a country as the US, which can restore or emphasize its leadership image.
