This commentary argues that with increasing instances of Ukrainian authorities disregarding democratic values, the country's association with the European Union seems questionable. A failure of negotiation between the EU and Ukraine could induce further deterioration of Ukrainian democracy and a slacking socioeconomic modernization of the state. The EU should therefore continue its efforts to sign the Association Agreement with Ukraine as soon as possible according to the author. This would help influence Ukrainian authorities in terms of democratic standards and open the way for substantial discussion on the benefits of integration with the EU.
