This paper examines Man-Portable Air Defence Systems (MANPADS), a term which refers to short-range surface-to-air missile systems intended for attacking and defending against low-flying aircraft. The expansion of the industry since the 1970s is discussed and a table summarizes incidents of reported MANPADS attacks on civilian aircraft in the past forty years.
