This note discusses the history of heavy machine guns and charts the subsequent technical innovation of the weapon. Heavy machine guns (HMGs) are defined as having a caliber equal to or greater than 12.7 mm and less than 20 mm, where it is generally accepted that cannon ammunition starts.
