In April 2009, the Overseas Development Institute and the UK Department for International Development co-hosted three events to discuss the future of EU development cooperation. All participants expressed a commitment to ensuring a strong EU voice for development embodied by a Development Commissioner, who would be responsible for the development budget. There was agreement on the need to ensure that all policies, in particular, trade and climate change, are coherent with development objectives. At the same time, participants felt EU development cooperation currently lacks vision and that a new political impetus is needed to define the EU’s role in the world.
