This paper discusses the implications of the growth of world population for climate change policy, in particular, the goal of restricting global warming to two degrees or less. The author argues that these conflicting goals have produced a notable gap between, on the one hand, arguments that stress the need for farmers in the developing world to raise production through higher yields per unit, relying heavily on increased irrigation, fertilizer application and intensive livestock production; and, on the other hand, the need for agriculture with lower net emissions. The author draws on existing literature to make several recommendations about the way forward.
