This article presents an overview of how networks are understood and researched in the development and humanitarian aid literature. It also highlights a number of outstanding questions or gaps facing research and practice on aid networks. It further examines theoretical tools used in other sectors, and more slowly in the aid sector, to understand network relations in terms of the identified gaps.
