The paper explores the role of taxonomies in knowledge management. It looks briefly at the emergence of taxonomies as a way to organize knowledge and presents some key definitions. In addition, it details the problems taxonomies can help solve and examines some of the risks and limitations associated with them. It explores how different taxonomies are suited to different purposes and lists the key steps for planning and implementing a taxonomy project. Finally, emerging trends in the field are examined.
