This paper discusses the competencies that a strategic leader in the future US Army must possess. The author argues that the current strategic leadership literature is replete with long lists of the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed by strategic leaders of the future. He therefore identifies the necessary metacompetencies that will prove useful: directing leader development efforts in the process of producing leaders with strategic leader capability; and encouraging self-assessment by officers of their strategic leader capability.
