This study seeks to deepen the understanding of the drivers of urbanisation in different parts of Sudan in relation to the broader economic, political and security context of the country. Firstly, it analyses the social, economic and environmental consequences of rapid urbanisation in Sudan and explores the ramifications for urban infrastructure and the provision of services in the country. Secondly, the implications of urbanisation in terms of the vulnerability of urban populations to future hazards and shocks is assessed. Finally, the ways in which international aid donors can best engage with changing settlement patterns in Sudan are discussed, and the implications for humanitarian and development programming in the future are examined.
