The proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMD), related technologies and components, and advanced conventional arms remains one of the gravest threats to the security of the international community. Export controls represent an important element of a comprehensive nonproliferation strategy. This monograph examines the current state of export control system development in greater Asia, with particular emphasis on the economic and security environment in which these systems operate. The author identifies the strengths and deficiencies of export control development. The monograph concludes by examining the applicability of the EU's effort to apply export control mechanisms to the regional forces shaping trade and security dynamics in Asia and what the US can do to facilitate greater export control development and cooperation.
