In January 2012 the European Commission launched an accelerated infringement proceeding against Hungary for noncompliance with treaty obligations over the independence of three state institutions. Hungary’s compromise attitude may be explained by a difficult economic situation and the government’s efforts to open a credit line with the IMF, which reported similar concerns.
