The talks between Georgia and the EU on a Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (DCFTA) are the most difficult part of the negotiations on a future Association Agreement. The relatively high cost of adjustment to the agreements and postponement of its effects might with time weaken the determination of both parties to reach a compromise. To ensure the talks run smoothly, the authorities in Tbilisi should be constantly pressed to respect democratic standards, which is the basic precondition for the success of the negotiations.
