With the economic crisis in Belarus deepening, Russia is seeking to take over its neighbor’s major energy companies. Because of the crucial importance of the energy sector to the Belorussian economy, Russia will be able to increase not only economic but also political influence in that country. In order to promote democratic change in Belarus and to preserve the independence of the Belorussian economy, EU countries should not introduce economic sanctions but rather should focus on positive actions, such as creating a program of modernization of the country.
