This paper examines the growing use of private military and security companies (PMSC) by the UN. It looks at whether there are established guidelines for policies governing PMSC use in different parts of the organization and if so, whether practices comply with these, or if PMSCs are used more as ad hoc ‘band‐aids’ in extreme operating environments. The paper also looks at where decisions to hire PMSCs are made within the UN organizational system.
