This paper discusses controversies surrounding the security and reliability of direct recording electronic voting machines (DREs). The Help America Vote Act promotes the use of DREs, which are the only kind of voting system that can meet the requirements to permit persons with disabilities, including blindness, to vote privately and independently. However, potential security vulnerabilities with DREs were publicized as a result of several studies. While the authors acknowledge that DREs do have unique security concerns, they question whether these concerns are best addressed by returning to the older voting systems.
