This monograph examines US-Ukrainian military cooperation within the context of future US peace and security engagements and the need to build military interoperability with other countries. The report consists of four parts: First, it presents a strategic context for US-Ukrainian military cooperation and provides general data on the history and current state of security relations between the two countries. Second, it focuses on the development and improvement of cooperative mechanisms for bilateral military contacts. Third, it provides data and analysis of peacetime military engagement and discusses important lessons learned. And finally, it examines Ukraine's practical cooperation with the US military in operations in Kosovo and Iraq. The author concludes that US-Ukrainian military cooperation has created a reasonable foundation for limited joint and combined action, with the US helping Ukraine to build a noticeable cooperative capability. The potential remains for even greater cooperation, if necessary improvements are made.
