In this Bulletin the author notes that Vietnam's successful conclusion of the Trans-Pacific Partnership negotiations will require concessions by Hanoi as well as its negotiating partners, including the US. Ties between the US and Vietnam have steadily improved since normalization in 1995 and are now partly motivated by shared concern over China's aggressive claims in the South China Sea.
