This monograph examines how the US won access to the Transcaspian region and why this will remain an issue of great strategic and policy importance in the years to come. These zones provide geographic proximity to key theaters in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Military power can be projected back and forth from any of these theaters. As a result, the Transcaspian region, which embraces the Caucasus and Central Asia, is pivotal to any such exercise. The author also offers recommendations on how the US might retain access to region in order to deal with future contingencies.
