This publication outlines the multilateral diplomatic process towards a weapons of mass destruction free-zone in the Middle East since 1974. It highlights the principle axes and aspects of continuity and breakdown. It puts the current revival of the process into perspective, notably in the context of the regional conference called for by the 8th Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference.
