Prompted by austerity-driven cuts in defense budgets and calls by the US to distribute the burden for common defense more evenly across the Atlantic, NATO members have been developing the Smart Defense Initiative. According to the author, the only way forward is genuine defense cooperation, involving more role specialisation, joint procurement, and common military assets.
