This monograph identifies some of the most salient characteristics of criminal street gangs, and examines their links with domestic insurgencies. The author argues that gang-related crime, in conjunction with the instability it wreaks upon governments, is now a serious national security and sovereignty problem in important parts of the world. The common denominator that can link gangs and insurgents is that the ultimate objective of some of these groups is to depose or control the governments of targeted countries.
