This briefing focuses on the role of economic and political marginalization in fostering violence by Boko Haram in Nigeria. The author assesses whether the Boko Haram movement can be referred to as a "revolt from the margins". Boko Haram is presumed to be responsible for a series of major attacks in April and there is little sign that the extensive police and army action has had any effect in curbing the movement. The author argues that it may in fact be stimulating further support, leading in turn to increased international concerns over the longer-term prospects for stability.
