Against the backdrop of the NATO withdrawal from Afghanistan, this paper discusses the potential role of the EU in aiding the political and security transition. The author argues that Western actors have not engaged sufficiently with the regional power dynamics that will determine Afghanistan’s future. The conflicting interests of Afghanistan’s neighbours need to be resolved in order to build a sustainable peace. The EU must consider how it can help promote a regionally backed settlement for Afghanistan.
