This paper focuses on separatist/terrorist activities in the Xinjiang region of China and Beijing's reaction to them. More specifically, it argues that the incidents at Urumqi in 2009 and in Hotan and Kashgar in 2011 have undermined China’s faith in its strict anti-separatist policies. The inability to define the attacks as separatist, terrorist or extremist-driven is one reason why.
