This paper examines the status of nuclear security regimes in Africa. It argues that addressing the challenge of securing nuclear materials in Africa must take into account the local context. For example, the experiences of states in North Africa are quite different from those in sub-Saharan Africa, and therefore, the principles applied on the African continent should include an assessment of regional as well as sub-regional dynamics. Moreover, it is vital that African states are made aware of the benefits of complying with international conventions, which often come with assistance packages and increased inter-governmental cooperation.
