In this paper, the authors examine the main reasons why Africa is marginal to carbon market to tackle climate change and offer an analysis of the potential impacts of efforts to extend the carbon market through the Clean Development Mechanism. Several reasons have been put forward in explanation of this poor regional inclusion in this market,exploring issues around the lack of project finance,risk-related factors,regional imbalances,limited institutional capability and the mitigation potential of the use of biochar and a sustainable forestry management and suggesting governments new forms of financing.
